No. Corn ethanol is not a perfect fuel, but its shortcomings have been grossly exaggerated and its many advantages underplayed, especially the fact that, thanks to ethanol, the U.S. in another decade will rely far less on oil-producing nations that don’t always have our interests at heart. It is nothing less than a big step on the path to a domestic source of renewable energy. Ethanol is already 7 percent of the fuel we put in our cars and trucks. Meanwhile, federal Department of Energy scientists said two studies the oil companies relied on heavily last year to impeach ethanol were “speculative” and “limited.”
