American farmers are among the world’s most productive; they are doing more with less, thanks to advances in biotechnology such as new breeds of corn naturally resistant to pests and herbicides; improved farming techniques and equipment that involve less plowing of the soil and more precise application of fertilizer, to name just a few. These days farmers grow five times as much corn as farmers in the 1930s on a fifth less land. Innovative corn farmers are using biotechnology to double corn yields per acre from 153 bushels now to what experts predict will be almost 300 bushels by the year 2030.
