After floods in the Midwest, and a big bump in production of ethanol in 2008, food manufacturers and other customers worried there wouldn’t be enough, and speculators briefly bid prices up. The old customers – food-makers, animal feedlots – and the oil industry blamed the newest customer for corn, ethanol, and in an attempt to discredit the fuel additive, tried to convince people that their only choice was between corn as food or as fuel.
